Overview

Allanyaz Utanyazov, in Nukus, the capital of Karakalpakya, breadwinner of the family since he was 12, and now harvests corn, teaches children English, and builds houses in the village, depending on the season. Repeating images: the sun rising, the ship sailing, the house being built. A Karakalpak saying: “If you want to sail, build a ship of good deeds” – like the protagonist does.
