Kazuo (Sato Koichi) and Ritsuko (Imai Miki) were happily married through an arranged marriage during the war. One year later, Kazuo is sent to the city as a member of an army press corps. When he returns home after completing his mission, he finds Ritsuko, who has contracted intestinal tuberculosis and is bedridden.
